When I was a child I used to love to go to the drive in. For anyone unfamiliar with this type of theater, it is one where you take your own vehicle and hook the speaker up to the window and sit and watch the movie. Usually it is a double feature and doesn’t get over until after midnight. I saw the first Star Wars at a drive in, and ever since then I’ve loved those places. Of course, drive-ins are far and few between nowadays which is disappointing to me. I remember when I first started dating my wife they closed the last of the drive-in theaters near us and I was very disappointed. It’s been over 15 years and our town just decided to open up a new drive-in theater and I’m so excited, I can now take my kids to the show and have them experience the same thing I did as a kid. When the they finally arrived for us to go see our first double feature I was just appointed when my HVAC system went on my car. The weather forecast for calling for around 80° that night and I knew that we would be hot and miserable in the car. The kids wanted to go anyway so we decided to make the best of it but after the first feature was over we realized quickly that we wouldn’t last through the next one. Hot summer nights in the south can be miserable enough with the heat but combined with the bugs that fly around it’s just not something most people enjoy. I made an appointment for the following week to have my car repaired and we plan to go again in a couple of weeks when there’s a new Disney double feature coming out. I hope that that time will give the kids the same wonderful experience that I had growing up and if they will continue to go to the drive-in as they get older. It really is a fun way to see a movie and you can even go in your pajamas if you want to.
I was really excited last fall when our town announced that they would be opening a drive-in movie. When I was a kid I used to adore to go to the drive in with my family. I saw the first Star Wars at a drive in, and ever since then I’ve loved those places. Now that I have kids of our own, I was excited to share the experience with them. I eagerly waited for the theater to open and the first weekend they were showing a film I packed the kids in the car and we had it off. I only told them we were going to the movies so when we pulled into the large empty lot they were a little confused. The only movies they have ever experienced are those at the mall where they sit in an air-conditioned room in recliner chairs and watch the show. The grand opening of the theater was held in late spring so the weather was already very warm. As we were sitting there the air conditioner in the car started to put off a foul smell and I knew there was a problem. The HVAC system in my car broke down so we had to sit in the car with the windows rolled up sweating through the first feature. We probably could have sat outside and still heard the speakers fine if it weren’t for the fact that there were mosquitoes everywhere. When the first feature ended, I walked over to the concession stand. I stayed there for a few minutes, soaking up the cool air and the smell of deep fried corn dogs, before returning to the vehicle. My family quickly told me when I returned that they were ready to go home but asked if we could come back another night after I got the air conditioner fixed in the car. I’m glad to see enjoyed the experience enough to want to come back and look forward to many years at the drive-in with my family.
I remember when I was a child and my parents took us to the drive in. Most younger people don’t even know what this is, but, I saw the first Star Wars at a drive in, and ever since then I’ve loved those places. Of course, most drive ins went the way of the dinosaurs by the time I was a teenager, right as I was beginning my dating years! I never knew how I missed those theaters until last year when one opened up right here in town. I am grown with kids of my own and I was excited to share the experience with them. Our first trip was a disaster, though, because it was very hot and humid. The air conditioning in our had vehicle died so sitting in a vehicle with three kids complaining was downright miserable. We had the windows rolled up to hear the speakers and only made it through the first feature. The other reason I couldn’t roll the windows down was because the mosquitos were everywhere and we didn’t want to get bit. I walked over to the concession stand, which was a small building near the back, and was happy to find the inside of it nicely cooled with an HVAC system. I stayed there for a few minutes, soaking up the cool air and the smell of my favorite fried foods before returning to my kids. They were ready to go home, and asked if we could come back another night to see the second movies. The next week I got the HVAC system in the car fixed and went back to finally have the wonderful family night at the movie.
When I was a kid I used to love to go to the drive in movie theater. I saw the first Star Wars at a drive in, and ever since then I’ve loved those places. Of course, drive ins went the way of the dodo bird by the time I was a teenager. Right in the prime of my dating years! I never knew how I missed those theaters until last year one opened up right here in town. Now that I have kids of my own, I was excited to share the experience with them. Our first trip was a disaster, though, because it was hot and humid and the A/C in my car died. Sitting in a car with three kids, rolled up windows, and no air conditioning is pretty much a nightmare scenario. And we couldn’t roll the windows down, because the mosquitos were so bad out and getting bit up is worse than poor indoor air quality. I walked over to the concession stand, which was a small building near the back, and was delighted to find the inside of it nicely cooled with AC. I stayed there for a few minutes, soaking up the central cooling and the smell of deep fried corn dogs, before returning to my kids. They were ready to go home, and asked if we could come back and finish the movie another night when it didn’t feel like the heater was running. The next week I got the AC in the car tuned up, and we went back to finally have the great family night we wanted.
